FE 24-105MM F4 G OSS | Ideal for animal photography | Review by MC Wong
An animal lover and winner of the Sony World Animals Contest (Hong Kong), MC Wong uses his Alpha 7C compact full-frame camera and G Master lenses to capture snapshots of animals at their natural, inquisitive and fascinating best.
The wonder of pet photography
The most wonderful moments may happen unexpectedly – especially when you're around your beloved pets.
That's why I love having my lightweight, compact and easy to manoeuvre Alpha 7C ready for action. My lenses of choice? I use the FE 50mm F2.5 G prime lens and FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS zoom lens, which give me a wide range of choices and shooting options.
More freedom, more flexibility with a zoom lens
I like shooting in suburban areas, as animals are a natural fit for the environment. I also enjoy carrying a lightweight camera and lens combination, which is perfect for these areas. My favourite zoom lens is the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS, as it's really light and easy to use.
Crucially, it brings greater flexibility to shoots – allowing me to shoot both panoramic and close-up shots with the same lens, without having to move.
Beautiful close-ups, from a distance
Shooting without moving can be absolutely necessary for certain shoots, as some pets can be sensitive to humans and the camera. In these cases, getting up-close and personal with these animals isn't an option.
The good news is that the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS zoom lens allows me to take close-ups of even the most jittery pets without worry – as I can snap photos from a comfortable distance away.
Fast, accurate zoom
Some pets are naturally active – running and jumping around outdoor areas energetically. These moments look brilliant in photos and videos… if you manage to capture them clearly. Once again, the outstanding Eye AF on the Alpha 7C – combined with the fast and accurate focus of the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS – make it an absolutely joy to snap action shots like these!
Zoom. Prime. Why choose? Pick both.
When shooting photos and videos of pets, patience is key. Let the animal get used to the environment, and to you and the camera.
For pet photography shoots, the combination of the Alpha 7C with the FE 50mm F2.5 G prime lens and FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS zoom lens is an amazing combination that delivers professional results – while also being beginner-friendly.
Just remember to connect with the pets you're shooting by communicating with them, letting go of expectations, being patient and capturing the magic when it happens!
