REC with Cinema Line: Turning Artistic Visions Into Reality
Sony has partnered with Redscope Films, Australia to produce a commercial that showcases the capabilities, versatility and range of the FX3, FX6, FX9 and VENICE.
From commercials to feature films, Sony’s Cinema Line cameras are equipped with a wealth of capabilities that help to bring your cinematic vision to life. With the aim of showing how the Cinema Line cameras are capable of shooting any kind of project in mind, the team at Redscope Films used the FX3, FX6, FX9 and VENICE in four distinctly different real-life production scenarios, highlighting actual situations in which the Cinema Line cameras would be used. The FX3 was used to shoot a promotional clip for an indoor bouldering gym, the FX6 was used for an editorial fashion shoot, the FX9 for a reality food documentary film and the VENICE for a fight scene in a feature film.
With a specific purpose and location for each of the four cameras, the crew set out to shoot their respective segments.
FX3 - A Simple Set-up that Captures All the Action
With its lightweight and compact build, the FX3 was used to capture every second of bouldering action as a handheld video camera in the promotional video shoot. Without a complicated filming set-up in the indoor gym, the climber and the crew were able to move around with ease. This has also allowed the crew to capture the epicness of the sport itself without being bogged down by cables and bulky equipment.
To take things a step further in this segment, the climber was asked to hold the FX3, showing how the camera can be used in both controlled and spontaneous movements. With its fast autofocus capabilities, the FX3 perfectly captured the climber’s dynamic movement. Its low-light shooting capabilities captured clear, noise-free footage in the dimly-lit indoor setting of the gym, which was a bonus.
FX6 - A Versatile Camera for Solo Productions
With an ever-increasing demand for video content amongst fashion brands as part of their social media marketing efforts, Redscope Films decided to demonstrate the versatility of the FX6 through an editorial fashion shoot. The FX6’s easy-to-carry design allowed the solo videographer to capture footage from various angles, with smooth movements when mounted on a tripod, on a gimbal or when handheld, showing how the FX6 can easily adapt to a variety of shooting situations.
The versatile nature of the FX6 comes in especially handy for fashion editorial shoots, where a small or one-man crew is usually expected. The FX6 also comes with an array of features such as the built-in electronic Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter, which helps to ease the workflow for solo videographers during principal photography and post-production.
FX9 - On-the-Fly Filmmaking with Pro Features
Inspired by Netflix and other high-quality content food productions, the goal was to establish a candid documentary feel for this segment. As the FX9 has become synonymous with documentary filmmaking, the team decided to film a reality food documentary from over the shoulder of the videographer to showcase the on-the-fly nature of such shoots, as well as to show how the camera is perfectly capable of capturing dynamic angles.
In this segment, a small crew was used from food preparation all the way to plating, giving viewers an insight into how a real-life production of this nature would be done. From dynamic to slower-paced cooking processes, the FX9 perfectly captured every action with unprecedented speed, smoothness and precision, allowing the team to put all the footage together in one seamless video that flows from one scene to another. This further established the FX9 as the go-to camera for TV and documentary productions.
VENICE - The Industry-leading Cinematic Production Powerhouse
For the final instalment of Redscope Film’s project, the team decided to film a cinematic fight scene to demonstrate the capabilities of the industry-leading VENICE through a fast-paced production. The aim was to film a cinematic action sequence that would captivate an audience with its visual aesthetics, while effectively demonstrating how the VENICE is able to keep up with dynamic action sequences in fast-paced, low-light production environments.
Due to the high-intensity nature of this fight scene, a large assembly of crew members were present on set, from lighting technicians to stunt choreographers and actors, to give an insight into the technical nature of a feature film set. This segment was the most detailed of all, taking lighting, fight choreography and location scouting into account. The result is a Hollywood film standard that sets apart the experience and functionality of all the crew, cast and equipment involved in the shoot.
Bringing Stories to Life with the Record Button
In all four segments, the record button was used as an overarching element – a symbol of creative concepts coming to fruition. Without the record button, there wouldn’t be a story to tell, show or share. The commercial placed an emphasis on how the Cinema Line cameras unify high technical quality and filmmakers’ artistic desire to share other peoples’ experiences with others around the world, which is something that many creatives resonate strongly with.
Whether through passion projects or professional briefs, Sony’s Cinema Line cameras have the power to bring stories to life from videography to post-production, all with a push of the record button.
