Why you should choose the Alpha 7 IV
The Alpha 7 IV is an all-rounder hybrid photo and video camera. This update adds a new 33 MP sensor, an advanced AF system with better eye-tracking capabilities, nearly unlimited buffer capacity, and support for more video modes.
The Alpha 7 IV is the fourth generation camera in the Alpha 7 series. Its upgrades give it more of an edge, bringing many improvements from previous models, especially with its autofocus and image quality. Even with its high resolution, it can shoot up to 10 frames per second with full autofocus and shoot full 4K videos, along with many more upgrades.
Below, we’ll highlight several features that make the Alpha 7 IV a step above the rest.
Improved image quality
Another big improvement with the camera is the image quality, as expected with its bigger resolution. It doesn’t compromise in low-light conditions as well, thanks to its ISO range with minimal noise.
Its colour accuracy has also been improved, coming out as accurately as possible in the images, making colour correcting easier when editing.
Images straight out of the camera also have a nice balance of detail and noise reduction. The 14-bit RAW images deliver up to 15 stops of high dynamic range, making the Alpha 7 IV one of the best cameras for image quality.
As an improvement from the Alpha 7 III, it also gains a new Creative Look feature. These Creative Look presets were previously known as "Creative Style”. The Creative Looks presets are a set of in-camera image filter presets, which can greatly ease your post-production process and help you achieve your desired look straight from the camera organically.
Improved resolution
At the core of the camera is its 33MP sensor. So you can keep shooting in RAW/JPG for as much as you like, or until the battery runs out, all in stunning quality. This is a step-up from the 24MP chip used by the Alpha 7 III.
Its Exmor R sensor also represents a big leap in image technology, with improved quality, colour gradation, and detail rendering for realistic-looking textures.
Upgraded autofocus
Compared to its predecessor, the autofocus system has been given a significant upgrade with its “Real-time Tracking”. Real-time Tracking in the Alpha 7 IV can seamlessly switch between eyes, face, and body tracking on a human subject. This feature isn’t limited to humans, as different modes can track different animals as well, including birds, dogs, and cats. This feature extends to video mode too.
Not only that, it also uses pattern detection, as well as the subject’s colour and brightness to recognise subjects that it has not been trained to detect.
Improved video capabilities
After the autofocus improvement, the next biggest leap in terms of improvement is video. It can shoot in 4K/60p also with 10 bits for colour depth. There is also a menu option that lets you decide which settings carry over from stills to video and which maintain independent values.
To do this, go to MENU → (Setup) → [Operation Customise] → Select [Different Set for Still/Mv].
It's an incredibly convenient feature – you can just flip the Stills/Video switch when you want to jump between shooting styles, making it a very seamless hybrid camera.
As mentioned earlier, the Eye AF and tracking mode work in video mode as well, making it easier to shoot action shots or interviews on this camera.
Ergonomic camera body
The Alpha 7 IV shares the same body as the Alpha 7S III, though the grip is deeper, so that you’ll never feel like you’re going to drop the camera despite it being thicker and heavier. It also comes with an improved joystick and a dedicated Type A HDMI socket on the side of the camera.
The rear screen can also fully articulate, allowing for easier video, vlogging, or selfie modes as compared to a tilting screen.
The Alpha 7 IV offers a lot in image quality, autofocus, video features, and a whole lot more. It’s also an extremely versatile mainstream camera connecting photo and video modes.
An efficient and also easy-to-use hybrid camera for any kind of photographer, the Alpha 7 IV will definitely give you an edge to your photos no matter how experienced you are in photography.
