Full-time YouTuber Cheng Zhang Yi and founder of ZY Productions put the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens to the test, communicating its efficacy across different shooting genres.  If there is such thing as a lens that allows you to do things you couldn’t before, this is it.

An all-new power-zoom system

The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens is the world’s lightest, full-frame, wide-angle F4 power-zoom lens which yields superior G lens image quality. Special attention has been given to achieving consistent and sharp performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges for maximum versatility.

Featuring a power-zoom lens system operated by four XD Linear Motors for the first time in an Alpha lens, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens delivers smooth zoom with extraordinarily refined imagery, expression and control. When testing the lens’ ability to zoom on a gimbal in an outdoor shoot, Zhang Yi explains that the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens power zooms internally and can be controlled wirelessly via a remote or a smartphone.

A simple zoom can be very powerful in filmmaking; zooming in draws the viewer’s attention in, while zooming out reveals more of the world around our subject,” he shared. “Combine that with some lateral movement from a gimbal, and you’ve got something incredibly dynamic.

While the dolly zoom can be executed on any lens, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens has a zoom lever that makes it effortless to perform super-slow constant-speed zooms with minimal noise and vibration. “You can also customise the speed of the zoom, so it’s perfect for the exact shot you are doing,” he described.

Mobility control to maximise versatility

While switching to live streaming an indoor event, Zhang Yi put himself in a situation where he left his camera unmanned in the middle of the seminar room as he operated the switcher from another side of the room. The power-zoom worked seamlessly on his Alpha camera as he controlled it remotely using the Imaging Edge app on his smartphone, making it an ideal lens for solo shooting.

Minimal focus breathing for refined movie expressions

Zhang Yi also pointed out that when shifting focus on a conventional lens, focus breathing may occur, affecting the visuals in video footage. “That’s something content creators like myself struggle with,” he said. One of the key benefits of the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens is the focus breathing of the lens is significantly suppressed, allowing for refined movie expressions.

Minimal focus breathing used to be a luxury enjoyed only on ultra-expensive cinema lenses, but not anymore. With this lens, you can rack focus without worrying about focus breathing.

A powerful, compact lens weighing only 353g

Initially, the power-zoom function could only be achieved by externally attaching a motor onto the lens in traditional cinematic productions. As a result, having a built-in power-zoom in the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens is a game-changer. “Every now and then, a certain piece of gear comes along that makes your job so much easier; and if you’re lucky, they come in the smallest, lightest packages.”
