Creative Portrait Series 1: Capturing A Child's Playful Moments With Authenticity
When it comes to photographing a child, mother knows best. Or at least that's true in the case of Adisa Kesornsukon (@pp.adisa). Child Photography is an especially challenging type of photography that requires patience, empathy and ultimately communicating authenticity in the pictures you take.
"It’s very challenging when you work with a child model because you will not know whether the child will enjoy it or not," explained Adisa when discussing her Creative Portrait project that featured her son, Haki. Adisa also shared some tips on snapping memorable photos of a child's best on-camera moments.
Setting The Perfect Mood
Choosing the right location for Adisa is key to evoke moods and emotions from the viewer. "Good locations help create stunning images. However, when you arrive at a shooting location, there may be times when you realize that it may not appear as attractive in shots as you thought it would be. To compensate, using long focal lengths can help you get attractive images by increasing bokeh in the background. In addition, adjusting tonal settings can help improve the photos to suit your photography styles," she said.
Adisa says she doesn't use props for her photography, but she often gives her child some goodies to coax him into smiling. "Children can be really lively and carefree when in front of the camera. Toys and snacks help to brighten my child's mood and make him more comfortable allowing me to capture his brightest smile and laughter " she said.
When taking photos of her child, Adisa considers the tone and colour of her images to create an active and carefree atmosphere. "The tones and colour all depend on what moods I want to portray for the image. Using the Alpha 7 IV camera’s intelligent and flexible settings, I'm able to achieve creative outputs that will impress everyone. Adjusting and processing the image is easy and you do not need any special knowledge to do so. In other words, this camera is a good choice for beginners."
Creating Precious Moments
When capturing children on camera, the right focal length allows Adisa to capture sharp details of her child's activities for an unforgettable and emotional storytelling. "When capturing children at play or simply a smile on their face, it is always best to have the correct focal length for the right composition," she said.
However, Adisa's real challenge comes in capturing her child in the best position. "You can't simply tell your child to do things he might not want to do. You must create the right conditions so that your child will want to do the actions and poses that you want. This creates a feeling of authenticity that viewers can relate to. For me, my husband helps by playing with him while I shoot the photo. This way, the images will naturally come out as joyful through his facial expressions," she said.
For Adisa, there is nothing sweeter than capturing her child on camera. "When you capture your child on camera, you are creating lasting memories that you can look back on and cherish as you and your child grow older. My advice for those looking to pursue child photography is to be patient with children and to spend time with them so that you understand what makes them happy," she said.
