How does your equipment help you capture your travels?

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens is a companion for all travels. Those who have used it can feel how lightweight and compact it is, which allows for prolonged focus during photography and adds to the satisfaction of shooting. When I viewed the images on a large monitor, the landscapes were captured with sharp resolution from the centre to the edges.

What are your tips for capturing great photos in India?

First of all, always have your camera with you and turned on, so you can react quickly when the moment comes. It's a busy city with lots of people, cars and motorcycles moving fast, so you need a camera with a fast shutter speed like the Alpha 1 to capture the moment. I tend to set it to 1/500 second or faster when shooting on the streets. Autofocus is also important, that’s why the combination of FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II with Alpha 1 was so good that I never missed a shot.

What are the most important things to watch out for when photographing in India?

Theft is the biggest thing to watch out for when travelling. There are so many people, cars, and motorcycles, so it's easy to get stolen from while you're distracted for a moment. So I was constantly aware of my surroundings while shooting. I always prioritised safety by carrying my camera around my waist with a hook or small bag in front of me. Cameras are expensive, and you can easily attract attention when you're shooting, so you have to be careful.

Experiment and try to get something out of the ordinary. Sometimes the best shots come from the most unexpected places.”

If you plan to travel to India too, Sung-Jin recommends visiting the Taj Mahal. “You have to see it in person to feel the magnificence of it.” And to those who aspire to travel the world and capture every wondrous moment, Sung-Jin advises to have patience and take your time with your camera.

What equipment did you take with you on this trip?

For this trip, I used the Alpha 1 camera and FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens. Owing to their compact size and lightweight design, they’re extremely portable. This allowed me to quickly take them out and shoot, even in unexpected moments. Plus, this setup provided the benefit of capturing shots from various angles with ease.

What advice would you give to those looking to capture travel photos in London?

I always carry my camera with me. While this applies to all travel destinations, it's especially crucial in London, bustling with a variety of rapidly changing scenes.

London’s narrow streets and tall buildings make it somewhat challenging to gauge the direction of light. When shooting street scenes, I looked for alleys facing the direction of the rising or setting sun. This way, I could ensure that the colours of the buildings were fully captured in the light.

What are some of your most memorable shots?

The photos I took on Shoreditch High Street are the most memorable. I used the telephoto end of the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens to capture London's narrow yet orderly essence. I aimed to replicate the landscape as our eyes see it, creating a sense of space with the appropriate aperture value.

I also vividly recall the sunrise photo taken from the London Eye. Witnessing the sunrise from it early in the morning was truly spectacular! The backlighting beautifully illuminated the cityscape, reflecting off the river. To capture this expansive view, I used the wide-angle part of the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens. I intentionally shot the pictures slightly darker, then brought out their full potential in post-editing.

Additionally, to accentuate the drama of the river's reflection, I zoomed in using the standard zoom range of the lens. This technique allowed me to capture the scene exactly as I envisioned, resulting in a shot that left a lasting impression.

Tell us more about your choice of equipment.

My favourite aspect of the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is its lightweight and compact size. I like the sense of stability it provides, no matter what my desired focal length is and no matter the location. It allows for more comfortable subject tracking when shooting dynamic subjects and enables me to capture a vast background at the scale I desire for still landscapes.

When shooting in Mongolia’s rugged terrain, it can be a hassle carrying bulky equipment, especially when spending hours in off-road vehicles. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II’s portability, excellent image quality, autofocus, and superb range of focal lengths make it the perfect choice not just for shooting in Mongolia but wherever you’ll have to move around a lot.

Do you have any tips for capturing the beauty of Mongolia?

My best advice is to keep an eye out for fleeting moments at all times. I recommend having a lens like the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II that you can quickly grab and shoot with. Knowing whether the morning or evening light is better for your location can enhance the scenic beauty of your shot significantly.

While this might sound obvious, you should always watch your equipment like a hawk. Not only in Mongolia but whenever you’re shooting overseas. Many travellers have lost or damaged their cameras over the years due to negligence, especially when travelling along uneven grounds. As such, keeping your camera strapped around your wrist or neck is a good safety measure.

Ultra wide-angle zoom lenses can tell many stories at once. They reveal facets of a photo that often go unnoticed by the naked eye, adding depth and grandeur to the scene.

Take a look at the photo above. The geometric floor tiles in the foreground draw the viewer's eye into the scene. As your gaze follows this, it leads to a woman praying at a shrine. The colourful temple makes you feel like you've travelled back in time. Yet, the backdrop is a bustling cityscape set against a canvas of sheep's wool-like clouds in a deep blue sky. Ultra-wide-angle lenses have an exaggerated sense of perspective, causing subjects closer to appear larger while those at a distance seem smaller.

A nice trick is to depict vanishing points resulting from perspective. Try positioning the road's endpoint in the centre of the frame and visualise the radial lines extending from it.

It's actually a handrail alongside a staircase, but it gives the illusion of a massive pipeline. This is precisely the type of image that ultra-wide-angle lenses excel at capturing.

Fighting against the Sun

When photographing the sky with an ultra-wide-angle lens, it usually picks up the Sun. The SELP1635G has low flare, eliminating the need to steer clear of the sun.

The sky is heavily overcast, with the sun directly in view. Such scenes can easily evoke a sense of gloom, yet they also offer a dramatic opportunity. To add depth to the composition, I positioned a steel bridge in the foreground and captured the sun framed against the distant buildings.

The SELP1635G demonstrates a decent level of close-up performance, with a magnification of 0.23x. Additionally, its 9-element circular aperture design ensures a creamy background blur.

Night travel

Photographing cityscapes at night is one of my favourite genres. Even the same place undergoes a dramatic transformation after dark, especially when employing long shutter speeds to capture light trails of cars passing through the city. I highly recommend a portable tripod to capture night scenes effectively.

Night cityscapes can be more vibrant than you might expect. I recommend shooting in RAW format, followed by post-processing. Sony cameras, in particular, can capture a wide range of information, from shadows to highlights. By using dedicated software for retouching, you can enhance the brilliance of your cityscape photographs even further.

The lit alleys of Namba

"Even though I have never visited Osaka before, the city holds a special place in my heart, not only as a renowned global metropolis but also because of the anime I watched growing up. When I embarked on this project, I set out to get a deep sense of the nuances of the city and its frame of mind - so I looked to the role of lights and lighting to convey the city's je ne sais quoi," he said.

For Choi, the journey to Osaka was relatively short and straightforward. "Various airlines offer a wide range of flight options from Incheon and Gimpo airports. In my case, I chose to fly from Seoul, which took about two hours. From there, I took a ride on the award-winning 'Rapi:t' train, known for its convenience and speed, to the city's downtown area. It was quite a unique experience, and the retro-futuristic design of the train was certainly something that I found aesthetically pleasing."

Once in Osaka, it was simply a matter of taking the time to explore the city and finding places that were outside the typical traveller's itinerary. "Whenever I arrive at a new city, my first instinct is to always make my way through it, either on foot or with public transit. This helps me acquaint myself with the ebbs and flows of the place. Osaka was no different, and walking as well as using the subway allowed me to discover photo-worthy gems and shooting spots scattered throughout. In particular, the Sakishima Building Observatory and Tempozan Ferris Wheel acted as interesting compositional elements that added a scenic quality to my photos. I was also able to find beautiful and unexpected lighting conditions that gave my photos a certain depth and emotiveness that really resonated with my own feelings while I was there in that moment."

Capturing Osaka’s golden hour from the Sakishima Building Observatory

One photo that was personally most memorable for Choi was a sunset view of the city taken from the deck of the Sakishima Building Observatory. "Initially, I was hoping to capture the entire city at night, but I was disappointed that I couldn't get the angles for photos that were any more unique than those in travel brochures or taken by the average tourist. I wanted something a little more distinctive. Just as I was about to throw in the towel, I noticed that the combination of the deep glow from the setting sun and the structural elements created captivating patterns and shadows. This was quite a stunning sight in real life, and I think I've been able to convey that in this photo."

Stunning Snapshots with the Best Gear

Choi used the Alpha 1 as his main camera as it allowed him to deliver the best video and photo results. "The camera's burst performance and precise AF feature were invaluable in helping me capture spontaneous moments as they happened. The 50-megapixel sensor combined with the electronic shutter and high-speed sync allowed me to take high-resolution landscapes with no detail left unfocused. Sometimes, I would record videos in 4K, 120p or 8K resolutions, which the Alpha 1 handles flawlessly," he explained.

The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM and the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lenses were his go-to choices for travel photography. "Wide-angle lenses can cause deterioration of quality in the peripheral areas and image distortion. Thankfully, the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens addresses these issues and was also able to withstand harsh shooting conditions. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II model, on the other hand, is much lighter than its predecessor and can maintain image quality across the entire zoom range."

For Choi, photography is about sharing precious moments that elicit strong emotions. He often speaks of wanting people who interact with his work to feel transported to wherever he was in a given photo. Simply put, he wants them to feel like they are a part of the journey with him. "My last solo exhibition was in 2018, and since then, I've been unable to host any new ones for various reasons, including the pandemic. However, I am currently planning a new public exhibition, in which I will showcase the true charm of travel photographs, which I hope everyone can join," said Choi.

For those looking to capture great travel moments on camera, Choi's advice is to distinguish their style from that of their peers. "Being intentional is hugely important, and so is engaging with the works of others - be it through exhibitions or other mediums - to get your own creative juices flowing. For me, this is fundamental to how I use light as a means of expressing myself and my subjects through photography.

His second piece of advice is that photographers conduct thorough research about their chosen destinations, as truly embedding oneself in a new place is essential to capturing the feel of each city. "For me, Google Maps is the perfect tool for checking the direction of natural light and lighting conditions at different times. It gives me detailed information about local spots through its Street View feature, which helps me account for the elements when planning my shoots."

Design and Build

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is lighter than ever. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II has carefully controlled focus rings, zoom rings, and even aperture rings.

On the left side of the lens is a switch that toggles between AF and MF. Alongside this is the Focus Hold Button, which you can personalise with the features you want.

On the opposite side is a switch that controls the resistance of the zoom ring. Set it to Smooth for a very smooth rotation, and conversely, Tight for a tighter rotation.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II can be attached with 82mm filters.

The back of the lens is designed to be dust and moisture resistant.

For this shot, I zoomed in at 70mm and shot the water droplets close up. With some zoom lenses, image quality falls dramatically at maximum telephoto focal length. However, this lens performs very well. The image is clean and free of chromatic aberration, it looks like it was shot with a prime lens.

I heard about an interesting structure, grabbed my tripod, and found sports cars stacked inside a building. I waited for a time when there were no cars on the road to create a surreal atmosphere. When shooting long exposures like this, use a good tripod and a 2-second delayed shutter to eliminate unnecessary shake from handling the camera.

Sony's 71st and newest lens, the FE 20-70mm F4 G (SEL2070G), is a highly versatile zoom lens with a 20mm ultra-wide-angle perspective. This is uncommon for a lens of its calibre. It’s also capable of 70mm telephoto shots and has a very high 0.39x magnification. As such, you’ll have an ultra-wide, standard, telephoto, and macro lens in one compact package!

Wind & Light: A collaboration with Sony Korea

The “Wind & Light X Sony” project was a fascinating collaboration with Sony Korea. The vision for this project was to showcase everyday materials in fashion shoots and make people see these common materials in a different light.

This shoot required a high-resolution lens that could capture incredible detail at both the centre and periphery of the image, so the combination of lens and camera was critical. For this reason (and several others, which are detailed below), I selected my Alpha 1 camera and FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II zoom lens for this shoot.

Why I chose the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II zoom lens

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is a lightweight lens that delivers the consistent, high-resolution shots I need for good-looking portraits. The lens is ideal for capturing vivid visuals in an instant.

It's also great that the lens is very lightweight for its specifications – which is important for all-day shoots, and for taking photos from various angles. Also, the fact that the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II can capture high quality images across its entire zoom range, makes it comparable to a set of prime lenses.

Finally, as I also planning on shooting video in this project, it was crucial that the zoom was fast and quiet – and the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II's silent motor certainly delivered!

Getting ready for the fashion shoot

Planning the shoot

This project involved a good amount of imagination and planning. Before the shoot, I visualised how I wanted the space to look and prepared everything accordingly. My preparations also included selecting the right models for the shoot. Typically, I choose models based on the project's vision – context is very important when making this important choice.

I always set aside some time for a short conversation with the models, so I can help them to understand the vision and how I see all elements of the shoot – models and the environment – coming together in perfect harmony.

Know your equipment to minimise delays

As a fashion photographer, you must be familiar with your equipment – so during the shoot, you are entirely focused on directing the shoot and eliciting emotions from your models (instead of experimenting with your settings).

Directing the models, camera settings

For lighting, I used a mix of persistent and instantaneous light. After explained the concept of the shoot to the models, I said they were free to move and pose on their own. I believe that when your models are feeling comfortable, the vibe you'll get in your photos, will be more natural and believable.

As for my camera settings, I used a high sensitivity setting for the shoot and was confident that the camera and lens would deliver on expectations. While tethering, I created a few options on-site, so the same atmosphere could be applied to later scenes.

A behind-the-scenes look at my favourite shots

For this shot, I thought about how to fully express all the various elements – the blue hues, art, and the model's outfit – within a confined studio space. I used a lot of bold, hard lighting to create strong contrast, and divided the background for an added sense of space.

Thankfully, the superior resolution of the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II zoom lens allowed me to capture every breathtaking detail, across the entire image.

To create a feeling of movement, I asked the model to be emotive – to walk and turn around freely. I wanted to create several points where the model's face and body would be lit with ambient persistent light, so I shot from various angles and captured every fleeting moment through my lens.

I was impressed at how the lens captured the shadows with detailed resolution, and even more amazed at the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II's fast focus speed and how its Eye-AF feature never skipped a beat! Even with the model moving freely and with speed, I was able to capture the result I wanted within 30 continuous shots.

I shot this scene using only persistent light, and the fact that the shot was not affected by a significant amount of noise (even when I increased the sensitivity settings), made me appreciate the outstanding performance of the Alpha 1 and FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II zoom lens, even more.

Tips for aspiring fashion photographers

As you start taking photos for your own fashion-related projects, it can be fun copying or mimicking other photographers' work – but eventually, you'll want to slowly and surely begin to plan your own shoots and take photos based on your perspectives and creative visions. This, in my opinion, is the best way to take good photos.

Meanwhile, listen to the people around you, take in their advice and use their knowledge to fuel and inspire your own work. Learn how to tell not only other people's stories, but yours too.

The magic of time-lapse photography

Time-lapse photography is a fascinating aspect of photography that compresses long periods of time into minutes and seconds – allowing viewers to see how a landscape or environment can change as the earth revolves and nature unveils its wonders throughout the day or night.

The principles of shooting time-lapses are simple, yet highly intriguing. The fundamental principle is being familiar with the duration of the phenomenon you plan on capturing. For instance, when shooting sunrise or sunsets, you would learn that the process of the sun rising or setting, lasts around one hour. This understanding will allow you to better plan your shots, settings, camera battery management, and more.

My personal favourite camera and lens combination is the Alpha 1 and FE 14mm F1.8 GM prime lens, which are perfect for truly captivating time-lapse shots.

Sunset in Changbin

When shooting the sunset in Changbin, I estimated that the shot would take around 45 minutes – starting 15 minutes before sunset and lasting until 30 minutes after.

This is where calculations are helpful. 45 minutes is equivalent to 2,700 seconds, which allows me to take around 900 time-lapse photos at a rate of one shot every three seconds. Remember that extending the exposure time can reduce light sensitivity in exchange for better photo quality. In the Alpha 1 camera settings, you can find an ISO AUTO setting with a minimum speed of two. The ISO AUTO range value can be set to your personal preference. Personally, I recommend a setting of between 100 to 3,200.

Before sunset, you can reduce the aperture to F16 in exchange for more depth of field. As the sun sets, the light will gradually weaken, and the exposure time will gradually increase to two seconds. When this happens, increase the ISO to 100 – 3200 to maintain the quality of your photos.

When then ISO exceeds 200/400, adjust your aperture from F16 to F11 and the ISO will be reduced by half. Keep doing so until your aperture goes down to F2.8.

The beautiful blue tears phenomenon

Blue tears is a phenomenon that happens as a result of bioluminescence, and is ideally captured in extremely low light – preferably during a high tide, when the waves hit the reef and the glow of the algae is accentuated. This phenomenon usually lasts around three hours.

To create a time-lapse video with a high frame rate, shorten the exposure time so you can capture enough photos during this limited timeframe. Note that shortening your exposure time will cause your photos to be underexposed, so choosing a high-quality, large aperture lens (like the FE 14mm F1.8 GM prime lens) Is essential.

These shots are scenes of the blue tears at Dongju Island, Matsu. This seasonal occurrence typically happens from April to June each year. I chose to shoot when there was no moonlight, and when the Milky Way was visible. In addition to these considerations, you’ll also need to consider the wind direction (southern wind is best), temperature (18 to 22℃ is recommended) and weather (clear and fog-free).

Because the shooting environment will be almost completely dark, I recommend using Manual (M) mode with settings at F1.8, 15s and ISO 2000. If there is a fair amount of light pollution, you can lower your ISO to avoid overexposing your shots.

Star trails and galaxies: 2 to 4 hours
Hanging sun: 20 minutes
Rainbows: 15 minutes

When programming interval times, you can use this formula:

Longest exposure time of the scene + 1 second = Interval seconds

For example, the longest exposure time for dawn and dusk is 2s + 1s = 3s, and the longest exposure time in the starry sky and the Milky Way is 15s + 1s = 16s.

Additionally, scenes that lasts a shorter time (like rainbows), can be shot using an exposure time no longer than 0.5 seconds, with the interval time being 1 second. This way, you can take 900 pictures within the 15 minutes that the rainbow is visible.

For scenes like a "hanging sun", the long focal length and slow shutter speed can lead to shifts in focus that result in blurry images. I’d recommend setting your shutter speed to no lower than 1/30s or 1/15 seconds, with your interval time being 1 or 2 seconds (depending on the focal length and the stability of your tripod). If your shoot requires a long focal length that must remain stable from day to night, long exposure remains a priority – but first, ensure that your tripod is very stable and prepared for horizontal stabilisation.

My thoughts on the FE 14mm F1.8 GM prime lens

To be honest, I had waited for a lens like the FE 14mm F1.8 GM prime lens for over three years! I usually shoot outdoors, which makes a lightweight lens is a priority for me. I also often prefer shooting in 8K, and the incredible 8K image quality of the FE 14mm F1.8 GM always gives me confidence that the shots will turn out excellent.

What’s more, the small lens diameter is ideal for use in mountainous areas. Under the low temperature and high humidity of these environments, the small surface area minimises contact with cold air, which is a common cause of mirror fogging – and something I’m happy to no longer worry over.

The FE 14mm F1.8 GM can also be equipped with a 100mm filter system. This lets me easily balance image contrast in advance, and extend exposure times to capture higher quality images.

When paired with the Alpha 1, which has a very strong latitude and saves 16Bit RAW files, this is an ideal combination for time-lapse photography at all times of the day – both mornings and evenings. With the 16Bit RAW files, details in dark areas can also be restored in post-editing, which greatly enhances the quality of the final time-lapse shots.
